One of the first books about Appreciative Inquiry; A Positive Revolution in Change was published in 1999 by David Cooperrider, Diana Whitney. They offered an approach to organizational change based on the possibility of a more desirable future based upon the idea, “What is different now, at this time?”. That difference systematically taps the potential of human beings to make themselves, their organizations, and their communities more adaptive and more effective. AI, a theory of collaborative change, erases the winner/loser paradigm in favor of coordinated actions and closer relationships that lead to solutions at once simpler and more effective. AI is about the search for the best in people, their organizations, and the strengths-filled, opportunity-rich world around them. AI is not so much a shift in the methods and models of organizational change, but AI is a fundamental shift in the overall perspective taken throughout the entire change process to ‘see’ the wholeness of the human system and to “inquire” into that system’s strengths, possibilities, and successes.
