Navigating Tough Conversations with Confidence & Purpose is a 6-hour course consisting of six modules designed to be completed at your own pace over six weeks. “It is not what you say; it is how you say it.” The wrong approach to tough conversations can cause significant damage in both personal and professional relationships and can ultimately escalate conflict. This course utilizes proven techniques to teach you how to develop communication competence and navigate difficult situations confidently and purposefully. Learning the tactics to manage your own emotions during high-heat moments will help you to de-escalate tense situations, leading to constructive outcomes. Methods of Instruction: The instructor will employ a variety of teaching methods including lecture, written assignments, recommended readings, videos, and recommended group discussion in the Community of Practice. This Course Includes Six Learning Modules Module 1 — Tough Conversations This module will take you approximately 1 hour to complete, including video and supplemental exercises. In this module, you will learn the factors that make conversations tough, difficult conversations topics, how the brain responds during tough conversations, and how to decide whether to avoid or hold a conversation. Module 2 — Transforming the Conversation This module will take you approximately 1 hour to complete, including video and supplemental exercises. In this module, you will learn how we tend to communicate in conflict, the components and outcomes of meaningful vs. unproductive conversations, and how to assess and frame the narrative. Module 3 — Self-Awareness & Regulation This module will take you approximately 1 hour to complete, including video and supplemental exercises. In this module, you will learn the emotional intelligence framework, ways of “Standing in the Fire,” and how to tolerate distress. Module 4 — Listening Deeply & Empathetically This module will take you approximately 1 hour to complete, including video and supplemental exercises. In this module, you will learn to identify barriers to listening, the importance of human needs, and how to listen deeper and ask more meaningful questions. Module 5 — Active Listening This module will take you approximately 1 hour to complete, including video and supplemental exercises. In this module, you will learn a variety of active listening skills, and how to use them in various situations. Module 6 — Approaches This module will take you approximately 1 hour to complete, including video and supplemental exercises. In this module, you will learn what meaningful conversations look like, conversational errors, the Difficult Conversations model, and interest-based problem-solving methods.
