From the opioid epidemic in the US to high-profile celebrity suicides, the topic of behavioral health has likely never been more on the minds of the population. For decades the norm has been to assume that mental or behavioral health was a taboo topic. However, new research has demonstrated just how closely physical and behavioral health are linked. With 1 in 5 adults in the US experiencing a behavioral health condition in their lifetime, it’s no surprise that this topic is coming to the forefront of concerns to employers. In this session, our subject matter expert will cover the current epidemiology and impact of behavioral health on the US adult population as well as how employers are experiencing increases in healthcare costs associated with such. We will discuss how perceptions of stress, environmental triggers and physical health are interwoven with mood disorders and substance abuse, potentially creating an ‘at-risk’ employee. We will discuss how population level reviews can identify opportunities for a well-being strategy to support the ‘whole’ person coming to work every day.
