By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Evaluate leadership readiness: Recognize the risks of promoting employees based primarily on tenure, loyalty, or technical expertise rather than leadership capability. 2. Differentiate leadership training from development: Identify the expectations, coaching, feedback, and accountability necessary to produce meaningful behavioral change. 3. Apply the four foundations of effective leadership: Understand how clarity, structure, accountability, and consistency support leadership effectiveness and organizational performance. 4. Recognize how leadership behaviors shape culture: Examine how the behaviors organizations reward, ignore, and tolerate influence employee trust, engagement, and retention. 5. Strengthen accountability at every level: Identify opportunities to reinforce leadership expectations throughout the organization, including senior leadership. 6. Expand HR's strategic influence: Identify ways HR can move from reacting to leadership problems to proactively building leadership capability, while taking ownership of its own effectiveness and accountability.

Are we truly developing effective leaders—or simply promoting strong employees into leadership positions and hoping they'll succeed? Organizations invest significant time and resources in leadership training, employee engagement, and culture initiatives. Yet many continue to struggle with inconsistent accountability, ineffective management practices, employee turnover, and leadership behaviors that undermine the very culture they're trying to build. What if the problem isn't a lack of training, but a lack of clear expectations, organizational structure, and accountability? In this thought-provoking session, Carrie Reif, SHRM-SCP, challenges HR professionals to rethink their approach to leadership development and organizational culture. Drawing on more than 25 years of HR and executive leadership experience, Carrie explores the difference between training leaders and actually developing leadership capability—and the critical role HR plays in influencing both.
