Learning objective #1: Upon the conclusion of this session, the attendees will be able to dissect the word stress from a personal, rather than global, perspective. An important step in taking our power back from stress is having a grasp on what the word really means. We’re bombarded with statistics on stress, but almost all studies come from self-report measures. Could it be that we’re all conditioned to say we’re stressed? The word itself is ambiguous and global. Participants will learn to dissect the word personally as opposed to what the media says. Learning objective #2: Upon the conclusion of this session, the attendees will be able to analyze previously unknown pressures to live stressed-out lives. People join The Stress Club when they bond over stress with their friends & co-workers. Since we are inundated with societal messages about stress, then it must be the norm right? So if I’m not stressed, I am at risk for being an outsider, labeled as irresponsible. Participants will examine real conversations and analyze why their talk keeps them bound to stress. Learning objective #3: Upon the conclusion of this session, the attendees will be able to construct the foundation for a life-long stress elimination plan. We’ve all heard the phrase something’s got to give! But then nothing does. Why don’t we rest? Why don’t we take time to enjoy life? By this point in the session, participants understand that the word stress takes their power away and that there are pressures that keep them bound to stress. During this portion of the session I’ll present a foundation to take power back forever based on 3 missing pieces of the stress puzzle: 1) Deciding on a different identity, 2) Making different conversational choices, and 3) Truly making and using a self-care list.

I. What is Stress? Open with my story of hospitalization for anxiety and relate to the stressed- out life I led. This usually opens the way for participants to relate to my content. a. The definition i. Poll the room, either electronically or conversationally – What do you think of when I say ‘stress’? This allows them and me to see that the word means many different things to different people. ii. Provide multiple definitions from researchers. This allows them to see that even researchers don’t agree on the word. b. Taking Care of Your Physical Self Poll the room, either electronically or conversationally – What do you do to take care of your physical self? This allows them to see the lengthy list options they have to choose from to manage their stress. The question is: why don’t we do them? c. Take Care of Your Mind Poll the room, either electronically or conversationally – What do you do to take care of your mind? The story that will follow allows them to see the way their minds can remain closed to thinking of stress differently. I will teach them how to change those thoughts. II. The Club a. Provide several conversational examples of The Club. Their job will be to i. analyze how these conversations keep them bound to stress. b. I will show/describe multiple examples of the media messages that life is i. supposed to be stressful. Then we will question that assumption c. I will connect the media messages with conversations as a cycle. d. Introduce the field of Discursive Psychology. III. Exiting the Club a. Puzzle piece #1 – Decide who you are. They will come up with a short list of i. preferred ways to identify themselves other than stressed-out. b. Puzzle piece #2 – Examine your talk. They will come up with a short list of i. words and phrases to use in conversation to tell others who they are as well ii. as to replace the word stress. c. Puzzle piece #3 – Take care of yourself. They will revisit the poll we did i. earlier in the session and I will add some they may not have thought of.
