This online course introduces participants to the concept of Emotional Labor (EL)—the often hidden effort of managing emotions to meet job expectations, especially in customer-facing roles. Learners will explore the risks and impacts of emotional labor on employee well-being, customer experience, and organizational outcomes, supported by peer-reviewed research and real-world case examples. Through this training, participants will: Understand the foundations of EL, including surface and deep acting, and their human and economic consequences. Examine how emotional dissonance contributes to burnout, absenteeism, turnover, and reduced service quality. Apply a prevention science framework to identify key risk factors—high emotional demands, lack of autonomy, and low leadership support—and strengthen protective factors through mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and cognitive tools. Explore leadership and organization-wide initiatives such as empathetic coaching and Voice of the Associate programs that reduce strain and foster resilience. Complete interactive knowledge checks and reflection activities to reinforce learning and ensure practical application. By the end of this course, participants will be able to design and advocate for interventions that mitigate the risks of emotional labor, improve employee resilience, and strengthen organizational culture.
