It is based on the international MHFA Guidelines adapted for the U.S. and is intended to expand mental health “literacy” and reduce stigma toward older adults experiencing mental health challenges. Purpose and Audience The course equips participants with the skills to recognize, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges in older adults, providing initial support until professional help is available. It is especially relevant for those working in or supporting older populations, as older adults may have unique risk factors and presentation of mental health issues. Course Content The 8-hour program covers: Common mental health problems in older adults: depression, anxiety, traumatic events, psychosis, substance abuse. Unique risk factors and warning signs for older adults. How to interact with a person in crisis and connect them with appropriate help. Expanded content on trauma, substance use, and self-care.
