Making Implicit Bias Explicit is a 6- hour course consisting of six modules designed to be completed at your own pace. This course will provide insights about how our brains are oriented to make implicit associations to function more efficiently, and that unconscious bias is a part of being human. You will learn about what defines different types of bias, where it comes from, and how to identify it. Unconscious bias shows up in our decision-making, reactions, and relationships with others. The aim of this course is to increase one’s awareness of unconscious bias and will primarily focus on implicit bias. It is imperative for individuals and groups to explore both explicit and implicit bias in any inclusion and equity efforts. It is not uncommon for people to find alignment in these attitudes. However, we can act with bias based on our implicit associations despite them being inconsistent with our stated beliefs and values. Understanding implicit bias provides a lens to explore the causes of gender, racial, and other social disparities in the absence of explicit intent to discriminate or cause harm. Methods of Instruction: The instructor will employ a variety of teaching methods including lecture, written assignments, recommended readings, videos, and recommended group discussion in the Community of Practice. This Course Includes Six Learning Modules Module 1 - Implicit Bias Defined (60 minutes) In this module, you will learn what implicit bias is and how it differs from explicit bias. You will also learn the origin of biases and how to identify them. Module 2 — Understanding Your Own Biases (60 minutes) In this module, you will learn about ways to identify implicit biases through examining behavior, as well as how bias is studied at the scientific level, through neurological measurement. Module 3 — Types of Bias(60 minutes) In this module, you will learn common forms of unconscious bias as they present in individual and systemic settings in order to increase your awareness of bias and identify ways to interrupt these. Module 4 — Mindfulness and Unconscious Bias(60 minutes) In this module, you will learn how to utilize mindfulness as a tool for self-reflection in order to increase your awareness of implicit attitudes and behaviors, reduce cognitive distortions, and engage in difficult conversations. Module 5 — Overcoming Bias(60 minutes) In this module, you will learn practical strategies to minimize the impact of implicit bias and how to identify and overcome old patterns to support equity and fairness. Module 6 — Overcoming Bias in Systems and Institutions(60 minutes) In this module, you will learn how structural bias is a product of bias that exists in institutions, systems, and economies and has been crafted over long periods of time. You will also learn frameworks to facilitate both individual and institutional change.
