By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Describe how Self-Determination Theory explains the role of psychological needs in workplace motivation and behavior. 2. Analyze workplace behaviors such as weaponized incompetence, quiet quitting, disengagement, and covert resistance through a motivation-based framework and identify psychological need frustration as one potential contributing factor. 3. Apply need-supportive leadership strategies that foster autonomy, competence, and relatedness in teams. 4. Design interventions aimed at reducing covert resistance and supporting engagement using Self-Determined Leadership, a motivation-informed leadership approach. 5. Reflect on and assess one's own leadership style through the lens of Self-Determination Theory to identify opportunities for supporting employee motivation, workplace relationships, and well-being.

This interactive two-hour workshop combines evidence-based instruction with applied workplace scenarios, discussion, reflection, and action planning to help participants translate Self-Determination Theory (SDT) into HR and leadership practice. Participants begin by examining the foundations of Self-Determination Theory and the psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, including how need satisfaction and frustration can influence workplace motivation, engagement, behavior, and well-being. The workshop then applies this framework to contemporary workplace challenges, including quiet quitting, weaponized incompetence, disengagement, and covert resistance. Through realistic workplace scenarios, participants identify potential motivational barriers, distinguish motivational challenges from traditional performance-management concerns, and select appropriate need-supportive leadership responses. Practical strategies address meaningful choice and autonomy, employee competence and capability, communication and expectations, workplace relationships, and team connection. The workshop concludes with an introduction to Self-Determined Leadership and guided action planning. Participants reflect on their own leadership practices and identify strategies they can apply within their teams and organizations to support sustainable motivation, engagement, workplace well-being, and organizational effectiveness. This live, virtual workshop is offered on multiple dates throughout the year. Participants select their preferred session during registration, with current session dates and times available on the Transformational Strategies Group registration page. Each session provides the same two-hour workshop content and is eligible for the same number of SHRM Professional Development Credits (PDCs).
