Approach mental health conversations with legal, ethical, and compassionate boundaries. Practice a three-part conversation model: Seek to Understand, Validate, and Zoom Out. Identify observable behaviors and articulate their impact without assumptions or diagnoses. Balance empathy with performance by recognizing the manager’s role as a connector, not a clinician. Understand how and when to refer employees to support resources such as HR, EAP, and accommodations. Gain scripts, language, and practical tools to increase confidence and promote psychological safety.
