This session provides an in-depth overview of SB 525, California’s new minimum wage law for healthcare workers, with a focus on how healthcare providers, particularly FQHCs, can navigate the legal, business, and operational challenges it presents. Discussions will cover who qualifies for the new wage rate, focusing on independent contract relationships, the financial impacts, such as increased payroll and vendor costs, and strategies to mitigate the cost increase SB 525 can entail. The session will include insights from three speakers: a legal expert who will address liability issues and strategies to limit risk, a business expert who will focus on the operational implications and how to fund additional cost, and the CAO of an FQHC who will share real-world experiences and practical approaches to managing these changes within the clinic setting. Topics will include reviewing contracts, managing costs, and ensuring compliance with the new wage laws, as well as vendor management 2025 CPCA Financial Conference *Invited Not Confirmed considerations, impact on staff, and using the PPS system to cover additional costs. Special attention will be given to joint employer status for contractors and how to navigate potential shared liability in contractor relationships, which brings exposure to many FQHCs who use contracted staff resources.
