Attendees will learn about the prevalence of addictions/substance use disorders in the legal professions and the reasons for the high rate. Attendees will learn the definition of addiction/substance use disorder, an explanation of the dangers of substance use (including alcohol use), and learn about treatment and peer support options.  Attendees will learn about how substance use and addiction can result in ethics rules violations, with specific rules reviewed and violation types explained.

In this session Mary describes her personal history of 20 years of drug use and 30+ years of sobriety. She explains her transition from a teenager shooting methamphetamine to a federal administrative law judge, then provides information about substance use disorders, such as definitions and frequency among attorneys. The interplay between substance use disorder and the relevant ethics rules will be reviewed, and finally, Mary will provide tips, guidance, and resources for those seeking to recover.
