Help people see how these beliefs skew the way they see other people and misinterpret their own behavior. b) Explain the four stages of the sexual addiction cycle. Explain how one gets caught up this cycle. c) Describe the levels of addiction. Help people see that even Level I behaviors have serious social and psychological ramifications – even hidden behaviors have hidden costs. d) Understand the role of childhood physical, psychological, and sexual abuse on adult sexual behavior. The purpose of this home study course is to teach professionals the underlying pathology common to people struggling with sexual addictions. The course will introduce them to using Twelve Step concepts to treat sexual addictions. This course lays the groundwork for the follow-up course on treating sexual addiction. The course consists of a twenty-five item test based on Carnes (2001) Out of the Shadows: Understanding sexual addiction (3rd Ed.). This book describes the addictive cycle, levels of addiction, sexual co-addiction, and family dynamics. It also discusses cognitive distortions that allow addicts and loved ones to deny or ignore problematic behavior, including “level III” behavior that has legal, social, and physical consequences. The book concludes with a chapter on applying Twelve Step concepts to recovery from sexual addiction.
