The Person Centred Nursing Framework (McCormack & McCance, 2025) highlights that while person centeredness is a global priority, staff often lack the knowledge, skills, and environmental conditions needed to translate person centered values into daily practice. Nurses working in aging services / with older adults are increasingly expected to deliver person directed, relationship centered care; however, current evidence shows that many continue to work within task oriented, institutional routines that limit their ability to honor resident choice, autonomy, and meaningful engagement. Research on person centered practice identifies persistent gaps in skills related to shared decision making, individualized care planning, and relationship based communication, as well as organizational barriers such as inconsistent leadership support and limited training in culture change practices. These gaps contribute to reduced resident quality of life and increased staff burnout. Education grounded in The Eden Alternative’s principles is needed to equip staff with the competencies, frameworks, and practical strategies required to shift from traditional institutional models toward empowered, person directed care environments.
