DescriptionLocation Purpose and Overview Shared Power in Supervision is a professional development workshop-style training for new and seasoned mid-level supervisors who want to approach their role through the lens of shared power. This training will help managers understand power in their supervisory roles and learn how to share decision-making and authority with employees—while concurrently providing clear expectations and support. Participants will focus on how managers can ensure staff are seen, heard, and offered agency by improving communication, holding accountability, and encouraging independent problem-solving. It’s designed as a workshop to feature both presentation-style training and small group discussions about the opportunities and challenges that come with a shared power approach. Participants will be able to talk with one another about real-life scenarios, leadership experiences they’ve had as employees, and shared power strategies they’ve used in their management or supervising roles. Participants will also complete a personal plan to record action steps they plan to apply within their work. Ideal workshop participants are nonprofit managers who want to strengthen their relationships with direct reports, including: - Staff who are new to management roles - Seasoned management staff with fewer than 10 direct reports Rationale Managers need to rely on the perspectives and expertise of all staff in order to offer meaningful programs, provide equitable services, and organize effective campaigns. Middle managers especially play a key role in building internal (and by extension, external) organizational cultures that promote shared leadership, value the contributions of diverse staff, and ultimately, bring power to communities in spaces where they belong.
