Reaching the pinnacle of your leadership journey is like climbing a mountain. The Excellerate coaches will act as mountain guides on your way to the summit. At each camp, one or more of the coaches will introduce missions designed to prepare and acclimatize you for the next stage of the climb. But before we begin climbing there are some orientation and assessment missions to complete here at Base Camp. You will complete four major assessments during the program: 360, Mindset, Emotional Intelligence (EQi2.0), and MBTI (more about these below) plus a few smaller ones. The first one is the 360- assessment, which you will begin right after you meet the expedition team and complete a “getting to know you” form. Completion of the assessments is mandatory, as the results will guide you and your coaches on this journey. Here’s how the assessments align with the mindset model: Our Mindset influences the thoughts that arise in any situation. These thoughts trigger Emotions, which color our Behavior and how we approach things, which creates our Results, or outcomes. These outcomes either confirm our beliefs and mindset or modify them. The 360 Assessment provides information about how promotable you are through the eyes of the people around you. It’s a look at what’s hiding in your blind spots. This invaluable report will identify your unseen obstacles to success, as well as hidden strengths. The Mindset assessment, based on the work of Prof. Carol Dweck and the Growth Mindset Institute, will provide a snapshot of your current core mental models that tend to trigger a fixed mindset response. Fixed mindset triggers: beliefs, high effort, challenges, setbacks & failures, success of others, comfort zone, feedback, and grit. In Your Mental Script you will complete a writing exercise answering questions about the language of your thoughts when you encounter difficult situations. The EQ-i 2.0 (self-assessment) will give you information about the 15 components of your emotional intelligence. In this program we will focus on: Assertiveness, Empathy, Reality Testing, Impulse Control, Flexibility, Stress Tolerance and Optimism. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) (self-assessment) reveals how you perceive the world and make decisions. It will provide insight about your preferences, and where you sit on the scales of extraverted vs. introverted, sensing vs. intuiting, thinking vs. feeling, and judging vs. perceiving. There will be other minor assessments looking at conflict and communications styles in later weeks. Taken together your results provide a comprehensive picture of you and how you operate in the world. With this information in hand, your coaches can help you prioritize what you need to work on and are better prepared to guide you on your expedition. This diagram illustrates the model on which we’ve organized the program. At each camp you will complete missions pertaining to one or more of these areas. In the missions pertaining to paradigms, we focus on values and mindset. Mindset is the foundation of everything we do, everything we will achieve, and how quickly. In the first five camps you will get a handle on what your fixed mindset triggers are and how to make a shift from fixed to growth mindset. You will also define your values and what is important to you. Contrary to what you might think, mindset is not set! It can be changed, and managed. Blind Spots, and hidden strengths, are revealed in the results of your 360 Assessment, which we will examine and work on at each camp. You will develop an acute sense of awareness about your continually changing blind spots. Planning is all about how you manage your time, energy, and priorities, how you set goals, organize, and achieve them. Contribution focuses on how you contribute, work with others, build teams, and create environments that allow people to do their best work. This section also includes networking which is an important career accelerator. Communication is perhaps the most important of all senior management skills. It encompasses the critical skills in everyday communication, when presenting, influencing, and storytelling. In Habits & Behaviors you will work on your daily routines for maintaining a well-balanced life that supports peak productivity and effectiveness. This area encompasses health & fitness, mind, emotions, spirituality, mental toughness, resilience, critical thinking, and other attributes that you rely on consciously or unconsciously. Management covers over 30 areas crucial to the success of any senior manager. We will delve into topics like Servant Leadership, Negotiation, Conflict, Managing Change, Strategy & Innovation, Project Management, Lean & Sustainability, Six Sigma & Continuous Improvement, and Financial Literacy amongst others. You may already have a deep understanding of many of these topics, and some may be new to you. The purpose isn’t to make you an expert in any one of them, it’s to gain a broader perspective required in leadership roles and pinpoint the 2-3 adjustments that will level-up your game. Which adjustments you focus on will be determined by the work you do in the six areas shown around the head part of the model. Improvements in these areas will inevitably influence how we perform as managers and leaders, and how others perceive us. Finally, we will look at Personal Branding (PB). At each camp you will work on building your Personal Brand Playbook! This playbook includes how you see yourself; how you see and interpret events; how others see you; how you act when nobody’s watching; how you manage yourself; how you behave toward others; how you deliver value; and how you will shine. Ultimately, it’s about defining and polishing your personal brand, changing others’ perspective of you, attracting positive attention, and promoting your abilities and potential. The 8020 Excellerate process is based on the premise that we are all capable of growth and change throughout our lives. In the past 15 years neuroscientists have done a lot of research into how neuroplasticity can be applied in leadership development. Much of our work draws on these findings. Throughout the program you will learn a little about how our brains work, the power of neuroplasticity and the mechanisms we all have at our disposal for making changes within ourselves to better our lives.
