Thank goodness we live in a time when long-neglected workplace issues such as sexual harassment and discrimination are finally being brought into the spotlight. Whether overt or unspoken, intended or unconscious, legitimate concerns are far too common. Prevention programs exist, but they’re often left on the back burner until a major misstep. The training world needs to catch up. Instead of dry statistics and legalese delivered primarily to the affected, companies need a dynamic new approach that not only sensitizes people but equips them to handle difficult situations without having it blow back on them. And it’s not only major violations. Calling a group of men and women “guys” is just as offensive as it would be to say “gals.” People don’t think about it that way, but they should. Prevention is not the sole responsibility of HR. Every employee, manager and leader needs to recognize the problem when they see it. They need to understand the damage it causes to the individual and the risk to the organization. And they need to ensure that it has no place in your buildings. Perception and impact are key to determining if statements or behavior cross the line, not intent. We take a highly interactive, simulation approach where participants step into various roles directly and indirectly involved in different situations. The company is fictitious, but the incidents are frustratingly familiar, drawn from our work with hundreds of companies. Let’s all learn to do the right thing.
