Participants will be able to: • Identify the 5 sequential steps in the conflict cycle and the role of beliefs and values in contributing to conflict. • Recognize where the Negotiation process falls on the conflict resolution continuum and compare it to other processes as it relates to the level of formality, coercion being used by or on the disputing parties, the decision-making authority of the disputants to determine an outcome, and the likelihood of a win/win vs win/lose result. • Compare the 5 negotiation styles and assess the impact of each on fulfilling the needs of each party vs. sustaining their future relationship. • Determine their dominant negotiation style and compare its advantages and disadvantages. • Differentiate disputing parties’ “needs” from their beliefs about who is right or wrong in the context of a conflict and understand the relevance of this distinction to resolving the conflict in a non-adversarial manner. • Apply the 4 major tenets of an interest based (or needs based) conflict resolution process i.e., 1) separate the people from the problem, 2) address parties’ needs vs. demands, 3) invent options for mutual gain and 4) use objective standards to determine a “fair” settlement. • Describe several strategies they may use to manage their own difficult emotions during negotiations and help the other party do the same.
